South Carolina offers a surprising variety of fly fishing opportunities. From the rolling foothills to scenic floodplains, South Carolina combines diverse fisheries with unforgettable experiences.

The Fishery

Mountain Stream Trout: Hidden Gems in the Upstate

South Carolina’s mountain streams are tucked away in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering anglers the chance to catch wild and stocked trout. These streams are fed by cool, clear waters that provide the perfect environment for rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Popular spots include small creeks and tributaries near Table Rock State Park and other hidden gems scattered throughout the Upstate.

Why Fish Here?

  • Scenic Beauty: The mountain streams are surrounded by lush forests and rocky landscapes, making for a serene fishing experience.
  • Wild Trout: Many smaller streams are home to wild brook and brown trout, providing a rewarding challenge for anglers looking for an authentic experience.
  • Seasonal Opportunities: The cooler months are ideal for targeting trout in these streams, especially with nymphs and dry flies during insect hatches.

Whether you're wading into a remote creek or casting from a rocky outcrop, South Carolina’s mountain streams are a paradise for trout anglers.

The Broad River: Smallmouth Paradise

The Broad River is a crown jewel for warm-water fishing in South Carolina. Flowing from the foothills to its confluence with the Saluda River, the Broad offers clean, clear water and diverse habitats, including riffles, deep pools, and rock ledges.

Why Fish Here?

  • Smallmouth Bass: The Broad River is widely regarded as South Carolina's premier smallmouth fishery. Look for these aggressive fighters in riffles, eddies, and tailouts where they lie in wait for prey. Use streamers, crayfish patterns, or topwater poppers for explosive strikes.
  • Stripers: In the spring and early summer, striped bass migrate upstream from Lake Murray, offering adrenaline-pumping action for anglers targeting these powerful fish.
  • Dynamic Terrain: The mix of mild rapids and calm pools creates exciting opportunities for both wading and floating.

Whether you're floating downstream casting poppers or wading in to fish rocky ledges, the Broad River offers something for everyone.

The Congaree River: A Diverse Warm-Water Fishery

Formed by the confluence of the Broad and Saluda Rivers, the Congaree River is a treasure trove of warm-water fishing. This expansive waterway is known for its slow-moving backwaters and diverse habitats, making it an ideal destination for bass anglers.

Why Fish Here?

  • Stripers: Spring and fall bring migratory striped bass into the Congaree, offering incredible opportunities to hook into these powerful fish. Look for them near tributary mouths and submerged structures.
  • Largemouth Bass: The backwaters and oxbows along the Congaree are prime habitats for largemouth bass, especially in areas with submerged vegetation and timber.
  • Other Species: The Congaree’s slower currents are also home to catfish, sunfish, and carp, providing plenty of action for anglers of all skill levels.

With its wide range of species and scenic beauty, the Congaree River is a great spot for anglers looking to explore South Carolina’s diverse fisheries.
