Fly Fishing the Tuckasegee River
The Tuckasegee is our favorite NC trout stream to fish from a boat although we offer wade trips there as well.
The Tuck is the biggest trout river in Western North Carolina. She's a broad, forgiving, and stocked-to-the-gills river with long Delayed Harvest sections. It's about the friendliest water we know for a first fly rod, a nervous spouse, or a kid who's ready to catch some fish. It runs right past the little towns of Sylva, Dillsboro, and Bryson City, offering easy access and big open casting lanes that don't punish a learning angler. Folks catch fish here. That's the whole point.
What's swimming in it
North Carolina stocks the Tuck heavier than just about any river in the state and the delayed harvest (or DH) stretches get tens of thousands of brook, brown, and rainbow trout every year, which means landing all three in a single day, a proper Appalachian slam, is a very real possibility. Up in the wild headwaters around Panthertown you'll find native brookies for the adventurous, and down low toward Fontana the river hands off to smallmouth bass when summer warms up.
When to come
Fall through spring is prime, when the delayed-harvest water is loaded and the fish are happy. The wading is easy and the casting room is generous, which is exactly what you want when you're learning or bringing the family. Summer warms the upper river and the trout slide toward cooler water, but the smallmouth down low pick up the slack. Like any tailwater, the Tuck rises and falls with dam releases, so we plan around the flows.
How we fish it
Wade or float, both are a good time on the Tuck. Whether we float or wade is highly dependent on what Duke Energy does upstream. We'll rig you up with a nymph setup or a dry-dropper, walk you through the drift, and teach as we go. This is the river where beginners and kids seven and up turn into anglers, and where a seasoned hand can still have a forty-fish day. Rods, reels, flies, and patient instruction are on us. One price covers one or two anglers.
Come fish with us
For floats, we only offer full day trips on the Tuck and we prepare lunches for these floats. We can float it in as little as 6 hours or so or when fishing is lights out, we may go just over 8 hours. We offer both half and full day options for the wade trips. Lunch is included on the full day option just like on the float trip.
